This is from a friend on LiveJournal, who has been following this story with great diligence.
Now, it seems that
rice gluten is also implicated in the problem. And possibly
corn gluten as well.
Folks, corn gluten is in
all pet foods. And wheat and rice and corn gluten are also in many human foods as well, and it is highly likely that some of these contaminated foodstuffs are in the human food supply, since the gluten used in many of the pet foods was human-grade.
And that is where this whole mess takes a turn for the very alarming, folks.
Food companies do not list
the country of origin in their labeling. And the
FDA isn't going to come out and announce that they're worried about contamination in the food supply. You have to really
dig deeply to find more information and updates. And if you eat
vegetarian 'mock meats', you're definitely in the danger zone.
Again, this might not be a bad time to move to locally produced foods, and foods that are 'un-messed with'. Make your own casseroles. Bread your own chicken. Cook your own soups, stews, etc. Don't let the convenience foods people cook for you. Cook for yourself. Or get with relatives and neighbors (or covens and churches) and do a cooking co-op and freezable home-cooked dinner swap. Might cure some of our 'bowling alone' bad habits.
Yes, it's still early in most parts of the country for local produce and farmers markets to appear, but get acquainted with them. Start budgeting for them. Because when the
shit hits the
media fan , it isn't going to be good.
